Joey endeavours to weave in clear alignment instructions, to allow students to experientially learn more about connections and patterns between postures. This can facilitate an understanding of the body-heart-mind a little bit better, finding a balance between stability and flexibility, dynamism and passivity. We hope these insights will help people to practice in a way which is functional and sustainable for the body, allowing for longevity in practice.
Morning Session | 9am – 12noon
In the Mysore-style class, students have the opportunity to develop their concentration as a tool for experiencing glimpses of silence, each moment of silence allowing our identification with a limited sense of self to soften and resulting in a grounded, expansiveness.
Each student practices at their own pace, led by and anchored in their own smooth breathing rhythm, following the Ashtanga sequence as they have been taught, up to place where they have been instructed by a teacher.
As the teacher is not required to stand at the front and provide instruction to all students simultaneously, they are free to help each student individually, in a quiet, introspective atmosphere, giving both verbal and physical adjustments to guide students towards a balance between effort and ease in each pose, and to provide clarity around key actions and alignment in the pose.
We ask that students have a pretty confident grasp of most of the first half of the Ashtanga Primary series, in order to be able to practice independently. This is to enable Joey to try and give an equal level of time and input to each student.
Lunch | 12 – 2 pm (not included)
Afternoon Session | 2 – 4:30 pm
Saturday afternoon will be a dynamic alignment-based workshop. The focus will be learning and refining key actions in a key group of standing poses. You’ll gain a deeper understanding of the mechanics of individual poses and of categories of poses, allowing you to apply these guidelines in a much wider variety of poses than those you practice within this class. As you progress to more challenging poses, this learning will empower you to work more intelligently and effectively.
Sunday afternoon will be a restorative session. Leaning towards a mood of ease. All physical effort is relinquished, the body is encouraged to rest and passively release tension in a series of supported poses. Subtlety of awareness is possible when we leave aside intense sensations. The mood of the class is introspective and although many of the poses are deceptively gentle, they have the potential to create a profound shift in your inner state.

Joey began doing a daily yoga practice in 1998 after a misspent youth pursuing the circus, martial arts and physical theatre. While at Goldsmiths University
studying drama, he set up and directed the Yoga Society. On graduating he began assisting Hamish Hendry at Astanga Yoga London and for 3 years he
practised and assisted daily. During this time he spent 3 months every year in Mysore with Pattabhi Jois and Sharath.
In 2004 he was authorised to teach the primary series by Pattabhi Jois and following that taught the Mysore program from 2005-2008 at Triyoga in Primrose Hill, London. In 2009 he relocated to Hebden Bridge and set up Ashtanga Yoga Leeds with the intention of supporting people’s yoga practice.
In 2012 Joey received authorisation level 2, meaning he has Sharath’s blessing to teach the full Intermediate Series. In 2014, Joey completed the 3rd series under Sharath Jois’ guidance at the KPJAYI in Mysore.
Joey has studied and practiced Iyengar yoga with Alaric Newcombe for twenty years, this process of combining different perspectives has been invaluable for learning to adapt and modify the ‘traditional’ ashtanga practice and make it a little bit more accessible; not only as people begin but also as they age.
Between 2019 and 2022 Joey trained in person-centred counselling, he currently volunteers with Noah’s Ark.
Joey has practiced silent sitting meditation in the Vipassana tradition and currently practices Zen under the guidance of Sandy Chubb.
