Classes we offer
Hatha Yoga
Hatha Yoga is a traditional style of yoga that forms the foundation of most physical yoga practices. Classes typically include yoga postures, pranayama (deep breathing), and short periods of meditation.
Hatha Yoga is practised at a steady, mindful pace, supporting strength, flexibility, and inner calm.
In our timetable, you’ll find several Hatha-based classes, sometimes listed under different names to reflect their unique themes and focus. Here are some of the main Yoga classes we offer at Yoga Shala Canterbury:
Hatha Yoga | level 1 or 2
Includes physical yoga postures & breathing & meditation depending on the teacher’s lesson plan.
We offer level 1 and level 2 versions; level 1 is suitable for beginners
Hatha Yoga Flow
Similar to Hatha Yoga classes but more flowy. Suitable for all levels, including beginners.
Vinyasa Yoga
Connects each posture with the breath, creating a fluid, dynamic practice that strengthens the body, increases flexibility, and boosts mental clarity.
While you can expect some challenging poses, this class remains accessible for all levels, with a focus on flowing through movements at a pace that suits everyone.
Steady Flow & Meditation
A grounded flow-based practice with fewer postures and longer holds. Allows you to move steadily and build strength and stability while focusing on staying present in the postures. The sessions end with 10-15 mins of meditation.
VinYin Yoga
A class that brings balance to the body and mind. Begins by moving through energising sequences, before settling into the stillness and rest of deeper, static postures. This class is suitable for all levels of experience.
Somatic Yoga
Is a gentle, slow practice that focuses on sensing and re-educating the nervous system rather than stretching or strengthening in the usual way.
It is not posture-focused. The aim is to release chronic tension by improving brain–muscle communication. Especially recommended to people who experience chronic pain.
Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga
Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is also a type of Hatha Yoga. It is a set sequence of asanas (physical poses) that are synchronised with the breath. Ujjayi Breath, Drishti (gazing point), Bandhas and Vinyasa are the key elements of this method and help us to experience the meditative quality of the practice.
Mysore classes are suitable for all abilities even if you don’t have an Ashtanga experience. Monthly-led classes are suitable for those with an established Ashtanga Yoga practice.
We offer;
- Mysore (assisted self-practice) – Mixed Ability incl. Beginners
- Monthly Led classes – Advanced
- Guided Ashtanga Yoga – Experienced
If you have an established Ashtanga Yoga practice, you are welcome to attend any Ashtanga Yoga classes from our timetable.
If you are a BEGINNER or have some Yoga experience but would like to learn this method, we offer you a 101 Pack to introduce the method. Please visit this page for further details.
Pranayama & Meditation
The term “Pranayama” translates as “vital life energy”. There are specific techniques to practise Pranayama. Your teachers might incorporate these techniques into their regular lesson plans.
Although we include these elements in almost every class, we have a dedicated Sadhana class that runs on Sunday mornings, once a month.
